Monuments, Diversity, and Democracy: Golden State Mutual Life Building Western and Adams

The City Project celebrates Black History Month February 2009.

The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance was one of the five largest African-American-owned insurance companies in the United States. In 1928, using all African American design and labor, the company built a two story building at 4261 Central Avenue in South Central Los Angeles where the firm occupied the top floor while the main floor was rented to black merchants. That building is now a cultural historical landmark. In 1949 the compnay moved to a the present building designed by the celebrated architect Paul Revere Williams at the corner of Western and Adams in the West Adams district.
