Victory for Baldwin Hills Community

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Legislature have included over $9 million for the Baldwin Hills Park and Conservancy in the final state budget approved on July 11, 2005. State officials listened to the people and rejected the proposal by the California Performance Review (CPR) to eliminate the Conservancy and its state funding.
The Center spearheaded the campaign to save the Park, the community, and the Conservancy. The Conservancy is making the dream of a two-square mile park come true in the historic African-American heart of Los Angeles, the biggest urban park designed in the country in over 100 years. The Baldwin Hills Park will provide the diverse and park-poor region with much needed open space for recreation, human health, conservation, education, and economic vitality.
The Center helped stop a power plant in the Park in 2001, and stopped a garbage dump in the park in 2003. Strengthened by years of struggle, the community remains more determined than ever to make the vision for a park in the Baldwin Hills come true for all the people of California to enjoy.
