El Pueblo Father Serra Park
Named for Father Junipero Serra, the founder of the California mission system and the first 9 of the 21 missions, the park is located in El Pueblo at the east side of the Plaza. Father Serra first visited the Los Angeles area in 1782, and resisted the fledgling civilian settlement on the grounds that it would threaten the well being of the Indians residing there. The Park is on the site of the Lugo Adobe, the home of one of the great ranchero families in El Pueblo and the wealthiest family in Southern California during the 1850s. The adobe was demolished in 1951, two years before the dedication of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Park.
