Support Malibu Park Access Public Works Plan June 10, 10:30 a.m. Marina del Rey

Posted: June 9th, 2009

The City Project has submitted the memorandum below to the California Coastal Commission to support the Malibu park access public works plan to maximize public access to the coastal zone while ensuring the fair treatment of people of all races, cultures, and incomes.

The major justifications for maximizing public access to the coastal zone are the following.

First, in a democratic society all people should enjoy access to public resources including parks,
beaches, hiking, and camping in the coastal zone. Taxpayers fund the acquisition and
maintenance of parks and beaches in the coastal zone, and should have access to the recreational,
health, environmental, economic, and other benefits of public access.

Second, the California Coastal Commission as a recipient of state and federal funds is required to ensure equal access to
public resources and lands within its jurisdiction. Ensuring equal access is required under state and federal civil rights laws. The Coastal Commission faces loss of state and federal funds for failure to comply. There is a history and pattern of Malibu restricting public access to parks, beaches, hiking, and camping in the coastal zone.

On Wednesday, June 10, 2009, the California Coastal Commission will hold a hearing that will decide the fate of public access to coastal parks in Malibu.
