San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy Visits Proposed National Recreation Area

Posted: January 24th, 2013

The City Project joined students from the third cycle of the San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy on their visit to the proposed San Gabriels National Recreation Area on January 12, 2013. Students enjoyed the outdoor recreation in a natural environment, but saw trash in the river, rocks and buildings sprayed with graffiti, and unsafe trails and river bank access. San Gabriel Mountains Forever is a diverse coalition supporting the proposed national recreation area as a way to improve the currently underserviced and underfunded area.

The Leadership Academy is a six-month volunteer training program on civic engagement, community organizing, and project management supporting San Gabriel Mountains Forever. Sixteen participants graduated from the Leadership Academy in its first cycle. They supported the San Gabriel Mountains Forever campaign in diverse communities across the San Gabriel Valley and the greater Los Angeles region through self-designed local community projects.
