Help Shape the Future of Los Angeles
In the next few weeks there will be five events in which you can have an impact on Los Angeles — a design workshop for the new public high school at Taylor Yard, the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan workshop, the open house to diversify access to and support for the Angeles National Forest, a symposium on Environmental Justice and Catholic social teaching, and a community meeting to preserve the Zanja Madre or “Mother Trench” that first brought water from the Los Angeles River to the heart of Los Angeles.

This meeting will provide the community with an overview of the school facilities, including the number of classrooms, recreational facilities, athletic program, library, and lunch area. The community will be asked to submit ideas and recommendations for the design of the new school. This is your chance to express the need for a community centered school with joint use between parks and school yards open after school and on weekends.

Share your vision for the Los Angeles River. Join fellow Angelenos in attending a community workshop kicking off the Los Angeles River’s Revitalization Master Plan. This first in a series of meetings marks the beginning of an 18-month planning process where the community will be invited to help craft the future of the Los Angeles River-”Our River, Our Future.” This is an opportunity for the community to share its vision for a revitalized Los Angeles River. This is the time to talk about parks, recreation, educational facilities, swimming, and other opportunities along the river.

At this meeting, the Angeles National Forest will present the new management plan for the forest. This will be an opportunity for the community to talk to Forest Service representatives about opportunities for children and families in the forest. What does Catholic Social Teaching say about the environment? Attend this Environmental Justice Symposium sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Office of Justice and Peace to learn about the latest successes in the environmental justice movement in the Los Angeles region. The Center will join Tree People and ONE LA as guest panelists to discuss how communties of color and low-income communities are impacted by and can impact the environment that surrounds them.

You are invited to attend a community meeting to discuss preservation efforts for the Zanja Madre, a historic L.A. waterway built in 1781. A portion of this remarkable artifact was recently uncovered during construction of the Metro Eastside project adjacent to the Los Angeles State Historic Park. Attend this meeting to learn more about the preservation efforts and to offer your ideas.
