California State Parks: Colonel Allensworth State Park
Posted: October 12th, 2009Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park commemorates the only California town to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans. Colonel Allen Allensworth founded the town in 1908. Colonel Allensworth, born a slave, served in the Army and Navy and retired as lieutenant colonel, the highest ranking black in the armed forces. A champion of the rights of blacks, the Colonel founded Allensworth as a way for blacks to become self-sufficient.
The City Project dedicates this site to Ted Jackson, Director of Operations at the California Department of Parks and Recreation, in appreciation for his dedication to state parks that serve the children and people of California.
