Big-City Directors, Civic Leaders and Advocates Gather in Chicago to Launch a National Agenda for Urban Parks and Recreation — Chicago Park District to Host
Hundreds of park and recreation directors, civic leaders and citizen advocates from the top 100 largest cities in the United States will gather in Chicago, Illinois on May 17-18, 2006 at the Palmer House Hilton for a groundbreaking summit aimed at launching a National Agenda for Urban Parks and Recreation. Robert Garcia, Executive Director of the Center for Law in the Public Interest, will speak on Historic Parks, Equal Justice, and Democracy.
The Urban Park and Recreation Summit is an outgrowth of a task force made up of park and recreation directors from the top 25 largest U.S. cities. Convened by the National Recreation and Park Association with a grant from the National Recreation Foundation, these leaders addressed a national concern for major issues facing urban parks and recreation systems. From these discussions came a unanimous decision to develop a National Agenda for Urban Parks and Recreation, and issue a call to action to citizens, advocates and elected officials.
