Biddy Mason Park "The Power of Place"

The Power of Place, a non-profit corporation dedicated to Los Angeles’s multicultural history, created the Biddy Mason Park in downtown Los Angeles.  Team members included Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, Donna Graves, Dolores Hayden, Susan King, and Betye Saar.

Dolore Hayden published the book The Power of Place: Urban Landscapes As Public History (1995), a book about “The power of ordinary urban landscapes to nurture citizens’ public memory, to encompass shared time in the form of. . . .  Shared territory and even bitter experiences and fights communities have lost need to be remembered—so as not to diminish their importance.”

These works have been influential in the work of The City Project.
