Transit to Trails Kicks Off King Gillette Ranch with Anahuak, The City Project, SMMC, MRCA
Transit to Trails took 340 children, families, and friends from the Anahuak Youth Association to kick off the King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains on July 28, 2007. The Gillette Ranch is home to some of California’s newest preserved and protected open space. This beautiful parkland has been a haven to people, plants and animals for thousands of years. The human history begins with the Chumash, who lived in the area for at least 9000 years; their village of Talopop is thought to be located nearby. In 1776, Joshua Bartolome Tapia journeyed through the areas with the de Anza Expedition. The Ranch supports a wide variety of wildlife, including eight sensitive species, several sensitive plant communities, and many large specimens of Valley Oak. Folks rode school buses back and forth from the Rio de Los Angeles State Park and hiked, swam, rock climbed, played hose soccer, picnicked, and just had fun at King Gillette Ranch!
Transit to Trails is a creative partnership between Anahuak, The City Project, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Mountains and Recreation Conservation Authority — and an anonymous donor.
