Community Demands City Action To Improve Neglected Skid Row Park
Rally Scheduled for September 17
WHAT: More than100 community members will hold a rally to protest the failure of the City of Los Angeles to provide adequate recreational resources and programming at skid row’s long-neglected Gladys Park.
WHEN: 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 17, 2007
WHERE: Gladys Park, at the corner of 6th & Gladys Streets, in the skid row neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles.
WHO: Community members and representatives of community organizations will make brief statements and be available for interviews. Groups attending will include United Coalition East Prevention Project, Volunteers of America, and Central City Community Outreach/Say YES!
WHY: In November 2005, the City Controller found a $2.3 million surplus earmarked for downtown parks; however, Gladys Park has never received funding, programming or any other resources from the Department of Recreation and Parks. Members of United Coalition East Prevention Project have met with city officials numerous times over the past several years, to no avail. Community members now demand immediate action by the city.
