The City Project celebrates Black History Month by honoring Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park; Ted Jackson, Director of Operations at the California Department of Parks and Recreation; and Buffalo Soldiers who patrolled parks in California.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park commemorates the only California town to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans. Colonel Allen Allensworth founded the town in 1908. Colonel Allensworth, born a slave, served in the Army and Navy and retired as lieutenant colonel, the highest ranking black in the armed forces. A champion of the rights of blacks, the Colonel founded Allensworth as a way for blacks to become self-sufficient.

We are grateful to Ted Jackson, an everyday hero and Director of Operations at the California Department of Parks and Recreation, for his 25 years of service dedicated to state parks that serve the children and people of California.
