MIGUEL CONTRERAS POOL OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2008

The Miguel Contreras Pool was opened to the public after over a year of outreach and advocacy led by The City Project and neighborhood activists. The City Project launched a media campaign with its own blog posts, articles in the Los Angeles Times and other periodicals, and targeted neighborhood outreach to force local officials to open the pool. See Attachment 17. The campaign to open the pool was covered in over 18 features on ABC and NBC and in the Los Angeles Times, La Opinion, Hoy L.A., and the Downtown News, which broke the story. YouTube videos and the extensive media coverage are available online.

In addition to opening the Miguel Contreras pool, the City of Los Angeles and LAUSD signed an agreement to add ten existing and five new school pools to the roster of joint use facilities that will be available to the public for summer use in underserved neighborhoods.
