Tentative Victory for Baldwin Hills Conservancy
Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger has included funding for the Baldwin Hills
Conservancy in his proposed 2005-2006 budget, suggesting that he
is rejecting a proposal by the California Performance Review (CPR)
to eliminate the Conservancy and its state funding. Senator Kevin
Murray (26th District) said the threat to the Conservancy is waning,
but "threats like this never completely go away."
The Baldwin Hills Conservancy is implementing the master plan
for a two-square mile park in the Baldwin Hills that will be the
biggest urban park designed in the country in over 100 years. The
Baldwin Hills Park will provide the diverse and park-poor region
with much needed green space for recreation, conservation, education,
and economic benefits. The City Project has spearheaded the efforts of
social justice, conservation, and civic leaders to save the park
and the Baldwin Hills Conservancy for all the people of California.
We are cautiously optimistic, be we must all remain vigilant
to ensure funding for the Conservancy remains in the final budget.
