Robert García, Civil Rights Attorney, Appointed to NEEF Board of Directors
“Mr. García has a distinguished career improving lives and communities through increased access to green space and health care, and has given a voice to those most vulnerable to environmental impacts,” said NEEF Board Chairman Decker Anstrom. “His expertise will enrich NEEF’s commitment to reach Americans where they are, making connections to the environment and how it relates to daily life.”
Mr. García graduated from Stanford University and Stanford Law School, where he served on the Board of Editors of the Stanford Law Review and is known as a “civil rights giant.” He is an Assistant Professor at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and has served as Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as well as an attorney with NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund.
Mr. García came to the US at age four as an immigrant from Guatemala. In 2010, he received the President’s Award from the American Public Health Association. He has been named one of the top 100 Latino Green Leaders by PODER Magazine and Hispanic Business Magazine recognized him as one of the 100 most influential Latinos in the United States.
“We know that children and underserved populations are especially vulnerable to environmental health impacts,” said NEEF President Diane Wood. “Mr. Garcia’s in-depth understanding of the needs and challenges facing underserved communities, and most importantly the solutions, will be an asset for NEEF as we work to raise the environmental consciousness of millions to improve the daily lives of all.”
NEEF was chartered by Congress in 1990 to partner with the EPA to advance environmental literacy nationwide. NEEF’s vision is that by 2022, 300 million Americans actively use environmental knowledge to ensure the wellbeing of the earth and its people. To achieve its vision, NEEF offers science-based, unbiased information through its own communications platforms, as well as a network of trusted professionals and affinity communities that, with their relationships and credibility, amplify environmental messages to national audiences.
