Making Parks More Inclusive UCLA Dr. Loukaitou-Sideris Parks Summit #healthylivingparklands

Keynote Speaker Dr. Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, UCLA Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Urban Planning Professor

People of color and low income people have poorer access to parks and recreation than non-Hispanic whites in Los Angeles County. This is an environmental justice, civil rights, and health equity issue. Beyond adding more park space, these public spaces must also be economically and culturally inclusive to increase access.

Prof. Loukaitou-Sideris highlights barriers preventing park access. These barriers include culturally competent park staff, culturally appropriate programs, high program fees, lack of public transit, and others. Government agencies must promote equal opportunity and alleviate barriers, working with community-based organizations.
