NEWSLETTER WINTER 2005
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) staff is proposing to charge children to play on public school fields. The LAUSD Board of Education will vote on this proposal in June.
We cannot allow LAUSD to charge non-profit organizations that provide recreation after school and on weekends for low-income children and at-risk youth. Children of color and low-income children disproportionately live in neighborhoods without places to play in school yards, parks, or their own homes. Fully 85% of LAUSD children are not physically fit. Physical education classes are bloated with up to 75 students, and physical education is not required after the tenth grade. Grassroots groups like Anahuak Youth Soccer Association are providing an invaluable service to keep our children and communities healthy and safe. These groups simply do not have the resources to pay to play on their own public school yards.
Stand up for our children and write, call, fax, or email the President of the LAUSD School Board, José Huizar, to let him know your opposition to this proposal:
